Chiang Me-Oh-Mai

Heather here. Our last stop in Thailand already upon us. We headed up to Chiang Mai in the more mountainous north of the country. I had actually been here once years ago on a short stop to do a lick of hiking, but didn’t spend any real time in Chiang Mai, so I knew there was a lot I missed last time. Paradise at What Price?

Fred here. When I think of Thai islands, I think of exotic beauty, rich culture and remote locations. The remote locations part is quickly changing. There aren’t too many remote islands left. Development has run rampant across the coastlines in this beautiful part of the world. Our original plan was to head to a couple of the few remaining jewels – Ko Lipe and Ko Taratao in the Andaman Sea near the Malaysia border. Bangkok 2.0

Heather here. Having said our second set of goodbyes back home in San Francisco, we commenced again on our journey. Next continent: Asia. Fred and I hunkered down for the 24-hour flight plan that would land us in Hong Kong and Singapore before finally hurling us onto the hot, sticky tarmac of Bangkok, center of the Southeast Asian universe. Jet lag got the best of us the first day as we drifted off for a “nap” at 4:00PM after arriving to our hotel; we got out of bed around 7:00AM the next morning.
